Art & Design is a thriving department which has increasing numbers at both KS4 and KS5. A new Subject Director for Art was appointed last year and started in September 2009.
Accommodation and Resources
There are three well resourced rooms within the department. Two of the rooms are designated Art & Design rooms primarily used for traditional art practices, including drawing, painting, printmaking and ceramics. Both rooms have a store room within, one of which houses the kiln. The rooms are spacious, well lit and open out onto the school grounds. The third room is a specialist digital art and photography space which also has a store room within and a traditional photographic darkroom. Other resources include: 5 digital SLR cameras, 10 digital compact cameras, 16 apple mac laptop computers, inkjet and laserjet printers, studio backdrops and studio lighting equipment. All rooms are equipped with a desktop computer, data projector and interactive white board.
Staffing
The Assistant Head for the curriculum area line manages the discrete subjects: Art & Design, Dance and the Performing Arts, Media and Music. The Art & Design department is currently staffed by three teachers and is lead by the Subject Director for Art. All of the teaching staff teach across the full range of courses and age groups. The department is supported by a part time art technician and a full time specialist apple mac technician.
Curriculum & Extra Curricula
Students are taught in mixed-ability groups for years 7, 8 and 9 and receive two hours per fortnight for art. Our provision for 14 - 19 include: Level 2 Creative & Media Diploma - Art & Design Pathway, Level 2 BTEC Extended Certificate - Art & Design with Photography, AS and A2 Level in both Fine Art and Photography. Numbers are currently increasing across all courses. The department provides a range of extended curricular opportunities for students. There is currently a very popular KS3 Art Club, a year 7 illustration club and a year 11 photography club. Educational visits include local galleries and exhibitions as well as national events. Visiting artists also make a valuable contribution to students’ learning. Art competitions and exhibitions run throughout the year within the School. The department enjoys and benefits from working with other departments and collaborative cross-departmental work is encouraged within the Creative & Media Curriculum Area.
The Art & Design department is a forward thinking one which embraces positive change and is committed to continual professional development in order to raise standards. New schemes of work are currently being developed along with exciting opportunities in the area of eLearning. As a language college, internationalism is very much at the heart of all teaching and learning.
Specific information regarding courses will be available September 2010.
