The Curriculum

We offer an innovative, broad, and balanced curriculum structured through three curriculum areas: International and Cultural Studies, Language and the Arts, Science, Maths and Technology. These represent the school’s vision of three centres of excellence, building on our nationally recognised success as a Language College. We aim to personalise learning in a number of ways, for instance by ensuring a wide range of challenging and relevant choices from 14-19. Links have been built with other schools and colleges so that students are offered specialist courses at other centres. Our detailed assessment and tracking of individual students ensures that teachers are fully aware of their needs and abilities.

At Key Stage 3, students are taught by dedicated teams of teachers who get to know them well, and we are building a coherent, integrated curriculum with close links to the work done at Key Stage 2. Students are given opportunities to pursue their own interests through individual research and there is a strong emphasis upon developing the Key Skills. All students experience a ‘Personal Challenge’ incorporating citizenship, education, careers guidance and international education.

The Language College

As a specialist Language College since 1996, we achieve challenging targets for students in modern languages from year 7 to Post-16. The funding has enabled us to create a suite of modern languages rooms and to set up two international communications and languages centres, one of them dedicated to media creation and community use. We have a wide range of staff from other countries and students of all ages have exciting opportunities for educational visits and joint projects with partner schools in Europe and beyond. We are proud to have won national awards for our creative use of languages software, and now act as a languages training centre for other teachers and for the wider community. Courses linking languages with other subject areas have also gained the school a European Award for Languages.
