Mr David Turrell, Executive Headteacher

David has been our Headteacher at The Sir Bernard Lovell School since 1995. He chairs the Kingswood Partnership, which includes the local schools of Downend, Hanham High, Mangotsfield, and The Grange. He has been a member of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority 14-19 Advisory Committee and the Nuffield 14-19 Review Body and has worked with senior officers in the Department for Education on the 14-19 Reform programme. He has also co-ordinated an International Networked Learning Community and sits on the International Committee for Europe as a Learning Environment in Schools (European Languages Orientation in Schools) and was the co-ordinator of a European Project for Languages, involving 28 schools in three countries. David provides national advice to the UK regions on 14-19 education and was a Headteacher Consultant to the British Education and Communications Technology Association (Becta) and to the Department for Education.

David is a national speaker on the 14-19 Curriculum Reform and was the Lead Headteacher in designing a learning platform with Studywiz, Melbourne, Australia, now being marketed across the United States of America. He has led the Department for Education’s Learning Visits on the 14-19 reform process for Headteachers and Advisors and was judged ‘Outstanding Headteacher’ by Ofsted in 2003.

He has worked internationally for several years co-ordinating work in France, Italy, Malta, Australia, Tanzania and Austria.

David was awarded Commander of the British Empire in November 2009 for his contribution to education nationally.

He has two grown up children.  His personal interests include current affairs, film, theatre, walking and travel.
