Post 16 is about freedom, responsibility and opportunity - in many ways you get out of it what you put into it. The Post 16 Centre has high expectations and aspirations and expects students to have them too. Most students will find the pattern of studies in the Sixth Form significantly different from GCSE. Although many may have begun to develop responsibility for their own studies in Years 10 and 11, this comes to the forefront in Post 16, where the secret of success is developing the ability to study and plan work effectively. Not all students will find this easy, but there is strong support available from Personal Tutors.
The timetable will be different. There will be fewer subjects, with more class teaching time; some groups will be significantly smaller than in Year 11, so there will be more intensive tuition. There will also be non-contact periods - though many of these will be needed to pursue the sort of private reading and research needed, especially for A Level study. On average there will be between three and five hours of additional study outside class for each A Level subject per week. Support for this time management will again be there from Personal Tutors, but it is also important that part time work is kept within a limit, so that it does not interfere with this commitment to independent study. In order to ensure students can follow a wide range of course options, some classes might take place after 3.15pm: the Post- 16 centre is effectively open for tuition from 8.50am to 5pm.
"...your study should be an enjoyable and worthwhile experience, not only in academic and vocational achievement but in the development of you as an individual."
